Here is the fifth one in the series (click here for the fourth one). It is an alapana and kalpanaswaras for a raga, for which elaboration is rarely done, but the krithi again is reasonably well known. The artist is very well known – a legend.

Can you guess the raga? Need more hint? Here is a portion of the kalpanaswaras

Can you figure out the mela and the structure?

Here is an alapana sketch by a different artist (for a different krithi), who is also fairly well known, perhaps more so posthumously:

Artist(s) – #1: Madurai Mani Iyer, M. S. Gopalakrishnan (Violin)
Artist(s) – #2: Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman
Raga: mALavi, a janya of 28th mela harikAmbhOji. It has the vakra/twisted scale: S R G M P N M D N S / S N D N P M G M R S. You can see P N M D occur a lot in that kalpana swara portion. You also see p m g m r … a lot (something shared with pURNacandrika – and thus you may have sensed some similarity to that raga). The MMI rendition is for the tyAgarAja krithi nenarunci nAnu.

Now that you know the answer here is the full kalpanaswara section of the first clip, with the refrain from the krithi. Whenever he does kalpanaswaras, it is always a special treat, it is indeed a thing of beauty and a joy forever. Makes it seem so simple 🙂 :
